Durga Saptashati or the Devi Mahatamya is a centuries old text recited by many Hindus especially during Navratri. It is among the loftiest of puranic compositions and is a part of the Markandeya Purana (one of the oldest 18 Mahapuranas). The Durga Saptashati is also popularly referred to as the Chandi Patha or the Chandi. This infographic provides an introduction to the three central narratives or charitras in this seminal work. The singular achievement of the composition is that it visualises the Supreme Being in a feminine form.
The three central narratives in the composition are:
- Devi Mahamaya and the story of Madhu and Kaitabha
- Adishakti Mahishasuramardini
- Devi Ambika and the annihilation of the demons – Shumbha and Nishumbha
