Shahid Diwas - Sardar Bhagat Singh, Shivram Hariram Rajguru and Sukhdev Thapar

सरफ़रोशी की तमन्ना अब हमारे दिल में है,

देखना है ज़ोर कितना बाज़ु-ए-कातिल में है?

“sarfaroshī kī tamannā ab hamāre dil meñ hai,

dekhnā hai zor kitnā bāzū-e-qātil meñ hai?”

It was the 23rd of March, 1931. Three young men were executed by the British colonial rulers in an attempt to suppress the unstoppable Indian freedom movement. These brave sons of Bharat who gave up their lives were none other than Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Shaheed Sukhdev Thapar and Shaheed Shivaram Rajguru.

India observes 23rd March as Shaheed Diwas every year to commemorate the martyrdom of these brave, young revolutionaries who played a pivotal role in our struggle for independence.

The lines quoted above are extracts of an immortal ghazal  in Urdu penned by Bismil Azimabadi. It epitomises the valour and sacrifice of the three young martyrs and  their patriotic fervour. The essence of these lines is explained below.

Our hearts are  filled with the desire to sacrifice our lives for our motherland…we challenge the strength of the enemies of our nation and would love to witness a demonstration of the might of those who want to kill us…

May the soil of India always give birth to brave daughters and sons.
