My salutations to Mahamaya (the primordial cause of creation) who resides in her transcendental abode (Shri Pitha), is the basis of all wealth and is worshipped by the Devatas. My salutations to Mahalakshmi (the great Lakshmi) who holds a conch (shankha), discus (chakra) and mace (gada) in her hands.
Note on Goddess Lakshmi
Mahalakshmi or Maa Lakshmi is generally referred to as the ‘Goddess of Wealth’. However, in the Indian tradition, true wealth is not only equal to material objects and pleasures. True wealth is true knowledge and Lakshmiji seated on a lotus, bestows not just material pleasures but the true knowledge that each one covets .
The grand Indian festival of ‘Diwali’ or ‘Deepawali’ is when salutations to the great Goddess Shri (श्री) reach their zenith. Varalakshmivrata is another festival devoted to Maa Lakshmi.Note: This shloka occurs in the महालक्ष्म्यष्टकम्|
