When and why is Vijayadashami or Dussehra celebrated?

The grand Indian festival of Dussehra (दशहरा) or Vijayadashami (विजयादशमी) is celebrated on the dashami (दशमी) on the Shukla Paksha of the month of Ashwina (September-October). On this day which is considered as one of the most auspicious days in the Hindu calendar, Shri Rama annihilated Ravana and Maa Durga destroyed Mahishasura to become Mahishasuramardini. Ayudha Puja (आयुध पूजा) is performed on this day – weapons and vehicles are worshipped and the Goddess Saraswati is invoked.
