The Hanuman Chalisa (हनुमान चालीसा) composed by Goswami Tulsidas in honour of one of India’s (and Asia’s) beloved Gods – the powerful, the valiant and the intelligent Shri Hanuman is one of the most acclaimed pieces of inspired and lyrical devotional poetry that is revered through the length and breadth of Bharat. Referred to as Chalisa because it has 40 (forty is chalisa in Hindi) chaupais, it is recited by crores everyday. This piece is an attempt to bring to the reader not only the original text but also the essence of the verses (भावार्थ) in both English and Hindi.
The 40 verses remind us of beautiful tales of Hanumanji and his unparalleled valour, his single-minded devotion to Shri Rama and Mata Sita and his unprecedented virtues. They also promise the devotee that she | he will be delivered from all fears, pains and vices if she | he recites this text with faith.

दोहा
श्रीगुरु चरन सरोज रज, निज मनु मुकुरु सुधारि ।
बरनउँ रघुबर बिमल जसु, जो दायकु फल चारि ॥
अपने गुरु महाराज के चरण कमलों की धूल से, अपने मन के दर्पण को पवित्र करके, मैं प्रभु श्रीराम के निर्मल यश का वर्णन करता हूँ, जो चारों फल – धर्म, अर्थ, काम और मोक्ष को प्रदान करने वाले हैं।
I have cleansed my mind which is like a mirror with the dust that lies at my Guru’s feet. I will now sing the great glory of Prabhu Shri Rama who bestows all the four purusharthas (four fruits of human existence) – Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha.
बुद्धिहीन तनु जानिके, सुमिरौं पवनकुमार ।
बल बुधि बिद्या देहु मोहिं, हरहु कलेस बिकार ॥
हे पवनकुमार! मैं अपने आप को शरीर और बुद्धि से निर्बल जानते हुये, आपका स्मरण करता हूँ। मुझे शारीरिक बल, सद्बुद्धि एवं ज्ञान दीजिये और मेरे दुःखों व दोषों का नाश कर, मुझ पर कृपा कीजिये।
O Son of the Deva of Winds (Pavanputra)! I am praying to you as I am cognisant of the weak constitution of my body and mind. Please bestow me with strength, intelligence and true knowledge and annihilate all my pains and vices.
चौपाई
जय हनुमान ज्ञान गुन सागर । जय कपीस तिहुँ लोक उजागर ॥ १ ॥
हे ज्ञान व गुणों के अथाह सागर, श्री हनुमान जी, आपकी जय हो। हे कपीश्वर (वानरों के ईश्वर), आपकी जय हो! तीनों लोकों (स्वर्ग लोक, भूलोक और पाताल लोक) में आपकी कीर्ति फैली हुई है।
O Shri Hanuman! You are a vast ocean of knowledge and virtues. Victory to You (I hail you). O Lord of the Monkeys! Your fame permeates all the three worlds (heave, earth and netherworld). Victory to You.
रामदूत अतुलित बल धामा । अंजनिपुत्र पवनसुत नामा ॥ २ ॥
आप भगवान श्रीरामजी के दूत एवं अतुलनीय शक्ति के भण्डार हैं। आप अंजनिपुत्र व पवनपुत्र के नाम से जाने जाते हैं।
You are the messenger of Lord Shri Ram and possess incomparable strength. You are known as Anjaniputra (the son of Anjani) and Pavanputra (the son of the wind).
महाबीर बिक्रम बजरंगी । कुमति निवार सुमति के संगी ॥ ३ ॥
हे महावीर! आप अत्यन्त वीर और पराक्रमी हैं। आपके अंग वज्र के समान बलिष्ठ हैं। आप पाप बुद्धि को दूर करते हैं तथा सद्बुद्धि (उत्तम बुद्धि) वालों के मित्र हैं।
O Mahavira! You are extremely valiant and powerful. Your body is as strong as a thunderbolt (Vajra – Indra’s invincible thunderbolt). You dispel evil thoughts and stand by those who are righteous.
कंचन बरन बिराज सुबेसा । कानन कुंडल कुंचित केसा ॥ ४ ॥
आपका वर्ण स्वर्ण के समान कान्तिमय है और आप सुन्दर वस्त्रों से सुसज्जित हैं। आपके कानों के कुण्डल एवं आपके घुंघराले बाल आपकी शोभा बढ़ा रहे हैं।
Your complexion is as radiant as gold, and you are adorned with beautiful clothes. Your earrings and curly hair enhance your impressive demeanour.
हाथ बज्र औ ध्वजा बिराजै । काँधे मूँज जनेऊ साजै ॥ ५ ॥
आपके एक हाथ में वज्र (गदा) एवं दूसरे हाथ में ध्वजा शोभा पाती है| आपके कन्धे पर मूंज का जनेऊ शोभायमान रहता है ।
You hold a thunderbolt (mace) in one hand and a flag in the other. A janeu (sacred thread) of munja grass adorns your shoulder.
संकर सुवन केसरीनंदन । तेज प्रताप महा जग बंदन ॥ ६ ॥
आप शंकर के अवतार हैं तथा राजा केसरी जी को आनन्द देने वाले हैं (उनके पुत्र हैं)। पूरा ब्रह्माण्ड आपके पराक्रम, आपकी महिमा और आपके वैभव की वंदना करता है (आपकी पूजा करता है)।
You are the incarnation of Lord Shiva and the one who gives joy to King Kesari (you are his son). The entire universe praises your prowess, your glory, and your splendour and worships you.
बिद्यावान गुनी अति चातुर । राम काज करिबे को आतुर ॥ ७ ॥
आप सभी विद्याओं में निपुण हैं, परम गुणवान हैं तथा अत्यन्त कुशल व बुद्धिमान् हैं। आप भगवान श्रीरामजी के सभी कार्य सम्पन्न करने के लिए सदैव तत्पर रहते हैं।
You are proficient in all knowledge systems, possess supreme virtues, and are extremely skillful and intelligent. You are always eager to accomplish all tasks of Lord Shri Rama.
प्रभु चरित्र सुनिबे को रसिया । राम लखन सीता मन बसिया ॥ ८ ॥
भगवान श्रीराम की महिमा को सुनकर आपको अत्यंत आनंद की अनुभूति होती है। आपके हृदय में प्रभु श्रीराम, श्रीलक्ष्मण और माता सीता सदा वास करते हैं।
Hearing the glories of Lord Shri Ram brings you immense joy. Your heart is the abode of Lord Shri Ram, Shri Lakshman, and Mother Sita.
सूक्ष्म रूप धरि सियहिं दिखावा । बिकट रूप धरि लंक जरावा ॥ ९ ॥
आप एक ओर माता सीता के समक्ष अपने सूक्ष्म रूप में प्रकट हुये, तो वहीं दूसरी ओर भयानक रूप धारण करके आपने रावण की लंका को जला दिया|
On one hand you presented yourself to Mata Sita in a small and harmless form while on the other hand, you assumed a monstrous form and burnt down Ravana’s Lanka.
भीम रूप धरि असुर सँहारे । रामचन्द्र के काज सँवारे ॥ १० ॥
आपने विकराल रूप धारण कर असुरों का सँहार किया, जिससे प्रभु श्री रामचन्द्रजी के अनेक कार्य सम्पन्न हुये|
In your colossal form, you annihilated demons and accomplished many missions of Shri Ramchandraji.
लाय सजीवन लखन जियाये । श्री रघुबीर हरषि उर लाये ॥ ११ ॥
आपने संजीवनी बूटी लाकर लक्ष्मणजी को नवीन जीवन दिया | इस अभूतपूर्व कार्य से हर्षित होकर श्री रघुवीर ने आपको अपने हृदय से लगा लिया।
You fetched Sanjivani (a magical life-giving herb) that brought Shri Lakshman back to life. Overjoyed by this act, Shri Raghuvirji (Shri Ram) embraced you with his heart.
रघुपति कीन्ही बहुत बड़ाई । तुम मम प्रिय भरतहि सम भाई ॥ १२ ॥
श्री रामचन्द्रजी ने आपकी भूरि-भूरि प्रशंसा की और कहा कि तुम भरत के समान ही मेरे प्यारे भाई हो ।
Shri Raghupati extolled your virtues and proclaimed that you were as dear to him as his brother Bharat.
सहस बदन तुम्हरो जस गावैं । अस कहि श्रीपति कण्ठ लगावैं ॥ १३ ॥
सनकादिक ब्रह्मादि मुनीसा । नारद सारद सहित अहीसा ॥ १४ ॥
जम कुबेर दिगपाल जहाँ ते । कबि कोबिद कहि सके कहाँ ते ॥ १५ ॥
तुम उपकार सुग्रीवहिं कीन्हा । राम मिलाय राज पद दीन्हा ॥ १६ ॥
आपने सुग्रीव को श्रीराम से मिलवाकर, उन पर महान उपकार किया। राम मिलन से ही उन्हें किष्किन्धा का राज्य प्राप्त हुआ।
You did a huge favour to Sugriva by introducing him to Shri Rama. He became the King of Kishkindha because of his alliance with Shri Rama.
तुम्हरो मंत्र बिभीषन माना । लंकेस्वर भए सब जग जाना ॥ १७ ॥
जुग सहस्र जोजन पर भानू । लील्यो ताहि मधुर फल जानू ॥ १८ ॥
जो सूर्यदेव इतने हजारों योजन की दूरी पर हैं कि उन तक पहुँचने में युग लग सकते हैं, उन सूर्यदेव को आपने एक मीठा फल समझकर निगल लिया।
Surya Deva (the sun) is so many thousands of yojanas (~8 miles) away from us that it may take yugas to reach him. However, you swallowed the distant Surya Deva thinking that he was a sweet fruit.
प्रभु मुद्रिका मेलि मुख माहीं । जलधि लाँघि गए अचरज नाहीं ॥ १९ ॥
आप प्रभु श्रीराम की अंगूठी अपने मुँह में रख कर, ( अत्यंत सरलता से) समुद्र पार कर गए। (आपकी सिद्धियों को ध्यान में रखते हुए) यह आश्चर्य का विषय नहीं है।
You crossed the ocean (easily) with Lord Shri Ram’s ring in your mouth. This is not astounding (given your divine powers or siddhis).
दुर्गम काज जगत के जेते । सुगम अनुग्रह तुम्हरे तेते ॥ २० ॥
राम दुआरे तुम रखवारे । होत न आज्ञा बिनु पैसारे ॥ २१ ॥
सब सुख लहै तुम्हारी सरना । तुम रक्षक काहू को डर ना ॥ २२ ॥
आपन तेज सम्हारो आपै । तीनों लोक हाँक तें कॉपै ॥ २३ ॥
भूत पिसाच निकट नहिं आवै । महाबीर जब नाम सुनावै ॥ २४ ॥
नासै रोग हरै सब पीरा । जपत निरंतर हनुमत बीरा ॥ २५ ॥
संकट तें हनुमान छुडावै । मन क्रम बचन ध्यान जो लावै ॥ २६ ॥
सब पर राम तपस्वी राजा । तिन के काज सकल तुम साजा ॥ २७ ॥
और मनोरथ जो कोई लावै । सोई अमित जीवन फल पावै ॥ २८ ॥
चारों जुग परताप तुम्हारा । है परसिद्ध जगत उजियारा ॥ २९ ॥
साधु सन्त के तुम रखवारे । असुर निकन्दन राम दुलारे ॥ ३० ॥
अष्ट सिद्धि नौ निधि के दाता । अस बर दीन जानकी माता ॥ ३१ ॥
राम रसायन तुम्हरे पासा । सदा रहो रघुपति के दासा ॥ ३२ ॥
तुम्हरे भजन राम को पावै । जनम जनम के दुख बिसरावै ॥ ३३ ॥
अंत काल रघुबर पुर जाई ।जहाँ जन्म हरिभक्त कहाई ॥ ३४ ॥
और देवता चित्त न धरई । हनुमत सेई सर्ब सुख करई ॥ ३५ ॥
संकट कटै मिटै सब पीरा । जो सुमिरै हनुमत बलबीरा ॥ ३६ ॥
जै जै जै हनुमान गोसाईं । कृपा करहु गुरुदेव की नाईं ॥ ३७ ॥
हे मेरे स्वामी, श्री हनुमानजी! आपकी जय हो, जय हो, जय हो! हमारे परम गुरु के रूप में अपनी कृपा से हमें कृतार्थ कीजिये और आशीर्वाद दीजिये।
O my Lord, Sri Hanuman! Victory, victory, victory to you! As our supreme guru, please bestow your grace and bless us.
जो सत बार पाठ कर कोई । छूटहि बंदि महा सुख होई ॥ ३८ ॥
जो यह पढ़ै हनुमान चालीसा । होय सिद्धि साखी गौरीसा ॥ ३९ ॥
तुलसीदास सदा हरि चेरा । कीजै नाथ हृदय महँ डेरा ॥ ४० ॥
दोहा
पवनतनय संकट हरन, मंगल मूरति रूप ।
राम लखन सीता सहित, हृदय बसहु सुर भूप ॥
हे पवनपुत्र! आप सभी दुखों का नाश करने वाले हैं, परम कल्याण की प्रतिमूर्ति हैं एवं सभी देवताओं के राजा हैं| आप भगवान श्री रामजी, श्री लक्ष्मणजी और माता सीताजी के साथ मेरे हृदय में निवास कीजिये।
O Son of the Deva of the Winds (Pavanputra Hanuman)! You destroy all problems, you are the embodiment of all blessings and auspiciousness, and you are the king of devatas. Please reside in my heart with Shri Rama, Shri Lakshmana and Mata Sita.
