Do you know that all Indians and Sikhs also commemorate Diwali as Bandi Chorr Diwas or the day when the Guru who was imprisoned was released signifying the victory of truth?
Guru Hargobind Singhji, the sixth guru in the Sikh tradition had been imprisoned by the Mughal emperor Jehangir at the Gwalior Fort. He agreed to be set free when 52 other prisoners were also released with him. Guru Hargobind Singhji reached the holy city of Amritsar on the auspicious day of Deepawali. The people of Amritsar who were already celebrating Diwali were elated and the Guru was welcomed with heightened festivities and since then Diwali is also referred to as Bandi Chhod Diwas (spelt variously).
