अष्टभुजा देवी कूष्माण्डा आदिशक्ति का स्वरूप हैं| उन्होंने ही अपनी मंद मुस्कराहट से इस अण्डाकार सृष्टि की रचना कर, सम्पूर्ण विश्व को अंधकार से मुक्त किया था| माँ दुर्गा की इस प्रतिमूर्ति के एक हाथ में अमृत का कलश है तो दूसरे हाथ में रक्त से भरा हुआ एक घड़ा है| नवरात्रि के चौथे दिन, भक्त देवी कूष्माण्डा की उपासना कर, न केवल शोक और रोग से मुक्ति प्राप्त करने की कामना करते हैं बल्कि सृष्टि में निहित परब्रह्म तक पहुँचने के दुर्लभ ज्ञान को जाग्रत करने के लिए भी प्रार्थना करते हैं।

She is the life force who infused energy and light into all that is manifest – before her there was only darkness. This eight-handed form of Maa Durga holds a pot of nectar in one hand and a pot of blood in another. Devotees pray to Devi Kushmanda on the fourth day of Navratri not only for deliverance from sorrow and illness but also for awakening of the intellect to appreciate the inherent divinity in all creation.
