माँ कालरात्रि का रंग रात के घने अन्धकार के समान एकदम काला है एवं उनके तीन गोल-गोल नयन हैं। गदर्भ पर सवार, चतुर्भुज माँ दुर्गा की यह भयंकर विभूति शुभङ्करी भी कहलाती हैं क्योंकि वे सदैव ही अपने भक्तों को शुभ फल प्रदान करती हैं। विद्युत की चमकीली किरणों की तरह दैदीप्यमान, माँ कालरात्रि की उपासना नवरात्रि के सातवें दिन, दुष्टों एवं भय से मुक्ति प्राप्त करने के लिए की जाती है।
She is darker than the darkest night and is referred to as Kalaratri (ratri means night). This three-eyed, ferocious manifestation of Maa Durga has four hands and rides a donkey. She is worshipped on the seventh day of Navratri for freedom for all evil influences and all fears. Devi Kalaratri shines brightly like the lightning that pierces a dark night and is also called Shubhankari as she endows devotees with good fortune and all that is auspicious.
