Quit India - Shahid Smarak, Patna

Shahid Smarak, Patna – In Memory of Young Martyrs of the Quit India Movement

Do you know that the iconic landmark depicted in this commemorative stamp is the famous Shahid Smarak?  Located at Patna in the state of Bihar,  it is a nation’s tribute to 7 young martyrs of the Quit India Movement.

On August 11, 1942,  three days after the Quit India Movement was launched by Mahatma Gandhi in Mumbai, a large group of students took out a peaceful procession in Patna to unfurl the Tricolour – a symbol of pride for every Indian. The British fired mercilessly on these valiant, young Indians. Seven young men lost their lives and became immortal in the annals of history. The oldest among them was in college while the other 6 martyrs were just school students who were not even 18 years old!

A grateful nation will never forget their supreme sacrifice. Jai Hind!
