The 24th tirthankara, Mahavira Swami had given humankind a timeless message – क्षमा वीरस्य भूषणम् | ( क्षमा वीरों का गहना है| Forgiveness is an ornament of the brave.) With that spirit at its core, Samvatsari (संवत्सरी) or Kshamapana, the last day of the great Jain festival of Paryushan (पर्युषण – दशलक्षणपर्व ) is a day reserved for reflection and for seeking forgiveness not merely as a verbal act but as a transformative endeavour that transcends the mind, speech and body (मन, वचन, काया).
The tradition recognises that human beings make mistakes every day knowingly or unknowingly. The beautiful ritual exorts human beings to look within and become self-aware, encourages us to acknowledge our mistakes with humility and seek forgiveness from all living beings. While we seek forgiveness , the festival also remind us to learn to forgive and to let go of ill will and resentment caused by past incidents.
खामेमि सव्वे जीवा, सव्वे जीवा खमंतु मे ।
मित्तिमे सव्व भुएस् वैरं ममझं न केणई ।।
मिच्छामि दुक्कडम्
मिथ्या मे दुष्कृतम्
