Bhagwan Dhanvantari (धन्वन्तरि) is the presiding deity of Ayurveda (आयुर्वेद – medicine) in the Hindu tradition. An anshansha (अंशांश – part of part) avatar of Vishnuji himself, he is said to have emerged from the Samudra manthan (समुद्र मन्थन – churning of the ocean by devatas and asuras) with a pot of amrit (अमृत – divine nectar or elixir that made the devatas immortal).

While he is worshipped by doctors and healers every day, special offerings are made to him on the trayodashi before Deepavali (Dhantrayodashi – धनत्रयोदशी), which is observed as Dhanvantari Jayanti (धन्वन्तरि जयन्ती – the day he manifested from the Samudra manthan).

Team Cultural Samvaad has curated a host of mantras and shlokas in Sanskrit in honour of the great Dhanvantari, with meanings in English and Hindi. These shlokas can be used as a part of one’s daily prayers or wishes on special occasions.

Who is Dhanvantari?  Mantra from Bhagavata Purana

He manifested from a part of a part of Bhagavan Vishnu himself (was an anshansh avatar of Vishnu). Renowned as Dhanvantari, he was the propounder of Ayurveda and entitled to a share in sacrifices (yajna).

Dhanvantari Dhyana Mantra

Dhanvantari Dhyana Mantra -

I bow down to Dhanvantari, the one who emerged from the churning of the ocean, is adorned with divine fragrances, holds a pot filled with amrita (divine nectar) in his hands and is the embodiment of Shri Hari.

Dhanvantari Mantra

Dhanvantari Mantra -

Salutations to Lord Dhanvantari, the divine healer who holds a pot of nectar in his hands, who removes all afflictions and diseases and who is Lord Vishnu, the sustainer of the three worlds.

Dhanvantari Stuti or Prayer

Dhanvantari Prayer -

I always offer my salutations to Bhagwan Dhanvantari – the one who has constantly wiped out all diseases, the one who has established the guidelines for maintaining good health and the one who has uncovered the hidden nature of herbs and medicinal plants.
