The first day of the bright fortnight of the month of Kartika (October – November), the day after Deepawali, is considered auspicious and is celebrated variously as Govardhan Puja (गोवर्धन पूजा), Bali Pratipada (बलि प्रतिपदा) and Gujarati New Year (गुजराती नव वर्ष).

The worship of Govardhan is not only associated with the miraculous story of Krishna lifting the Govardhan hill but also reminds us of the immense role of the ecosystem in environmental sustenance. Bali Pratipada honours the great King Bali who was given a boon by Vishnu in his Vamana avatar that he would rule the earth for three days during the festival of Diwali.
