Kali Puja (काली पूजा), which is also referred to as Shyama Puja or Mahanisha Puja, is performed on the dark night of Deepawali (Kartika Amavasya or Ashwin Amavasya depending on the Hindu calendar tradition in use) primarily in Bengal, Odisha, Assam, Jharkhand and Tripura. Kali is sometimes said to be both Lakshmi and Saraswati and is worshipped not only in her ferocious form as the one who annihilated Chanda and Munda (Chamunda) and Raktabija among other powerful demons but also in her form as the compassionate mother of all beings, Maa Kali.
