Bhai Dooj (भाई दूज) or Yama Dwitiya (यम द्वितीया) or Bhaubeej (भाऊबीज or Bhau Beej) is a festival that is celebrated on the second day of the bright fortnight of the month of Kartika (October – November). It honours the eternal bond between a sister and her brother, and the story of its origin is linked to the divine twins Yama (Dharmaraja) and Yami (the river Yamuna). On this day, brothers visit their sisters and shower them with lavish gifts while sisters lay out royal and sumptuous feasts for them. The sister applies a tilak or tika on the forehead of her brother and prays for his well-being.
