When and why is Buddha Purnima celebrated?

Buddha Purnima (बुद्ध पूर्णिमा) or Vesak Day is celebrated on the full moon day in the month of Vaishakha (April – May) to mark three critical milestones of Gautam Buddha’s life – birth, awakening and maha parinirvana or passing away from being. Shakyamuni  lived and roamed in the spiritually fertile land of India during the 5th-6th centuries BCE. A mahapurusha and a spiritual leader of human beings, he is considered as the founder of Buddhism, a world religion and an avatar of Vishnu in Hinduism. His eternal teachings – the Dhamma continue to inspire millions around the globe even 2,500 years later.
