Shiva – Sanskrit Shlokas and Mantras with Meanings

Join Cultural Samvaad’s WhatsApp Community

Shiva is one of the most ancient deities in the Sanatan tradition and artefacts which unmistakably resemble a Shiva linga have even been excavated from the Sindhu Saraswati Valley or Harappan civilisation. In the Vedas, we encounter the fierce Rudra who is the Lord of all animals and the one who cures all ailments. In the Shvetashvatara Upanishad, Rudra is revered as the eternal cause, the formless, timeless Parabrahma and in the Puranas, he is Shiva, the auspicious one, the one who blesses one and all,the consort of Parvati who resides on the Kailash Parvata and rides a bull and wears nagas around his neck, the one who drank halahala or poison and the one who can is time itself.

While it is impossible to narrate the multifarious stories associated with the Adideva Mahadeva and ennumerate all stotras, shlokas and mantras dedicated to him, Team Cultural Samvaad has put together some better known Sanskrit prayers, shlokas and mantras dedicated to Rudra Shiva with meanings in English and Hindi. Devotees use these verses to worship Shiva Shambu everyday, especially on Mondays and Pradosh. You can click on the images for a more detailed explanation and transliteration. This list keeps expanding. Pls send in your suggestions.  We also have separate notes on the Dwadasha Jyotirlinga and Stories of Shiva among others.
