When and why is Ganesh Chaturthi celebrated?

Chaturthi is the fourth tithi (lunar day) of every fortnight as per the Hindu calendar. The chaturthi of the Krishna Paksha or the waning moon of every month is observed as Sankashti Chaturthi by the devout and Shri Ganesh is worshipped on this day.

However, the chaturthi that has acquired seminal importance in contemporary times is the Chaturthi of the Shukla Paksha of the month of Bhadrapada (August – September) and is widely regarded as Ganesh Chaturthi. A grand 10-day public festival, Ganeshotsava, is celebrated in Maharashtra and many other states across the country when Ganpati, he who is the first to be worshipped, is welcomed in public pandals and homes. In many states like Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu, the domestic worship of Ganapati is typically for a shorter period. The festival culminates with the visarjan of the idols of Gajanan. The other important Chaturthi of the Shukla Paksha of the month of Magh (January – February) is also revered by many and celebrated as Maaghi Ganesh Chaturthi or Ganesh Jayanti.
