The word Shivratri (also spelled Shivaratri – शिवरात्रि) means the night of the Shiva. The day before the new moon or amavasya of every month is referred to as Shivratri but it is the fourteenth day or chaturdashi  of the krishna paksha in the month of February-March that is celebrated as Maha Shivratri (महाशिवरात्रि) – the great night of Shiva, Mahadeva, Shankar, Rudra, Shambhu – the Adiyogi. It is a day reserved for fasting, meditation and prayers.
