Ekadashi (एकादशी) refers to the 11th lunar day of each fortnight of every month in the Hindu calendar. This auspicious day is traditionally dedicated to Shri Vishnu (श्री विष्णु) and many a devout fast on all ekadashis of the year. The ekadashi in the bright fortnight (shukla paksha – शुक्ल पक्ष) of the month of Ashadha (आषाढ़ – June-July) is known as Devashayani Ekadashi (देवशयनी एकादशी) and is especially significant as Chaturmaas (चातुर्मास – a period of four months) commences from this day and ends on Devotthaani Ekadashi in the month of Karthika (October-November).

Devashayani Ekadashi, also called Ashadhi Ekadashi (आषाढी एकादशी) is celebrated with great fervour by the followers of Vitthala or Vithoba or Panduranga especially in Maharashtra and parts of Karnataka. Lakhs of varkaris walk to Panduranga’s main abode at Pandharpur with palkis (palanquins) and the rhythmic chants of Vitthala, Vitthalamake the Western Ghats and Maharashtra come alive.

Greetings on Devashayani Ekadashi and Ashadhi Ekadashi.
